Local Effluent Filter Cleaning in Pueblo, CO

A shower that drains a little slower each week, a toilet that gurgles when the washing machine empties, a sink that clears but takes its time: in a house on a septic system, these often trace back to the effluent filter in the outlet baffle of the tank. The filter catches solids before they leave the tank, and when it clogs, water has trouble getting out. Cleaning it is a short visit, and it suits any homeowner who has noticed those symptoms or has been told the filter is due.

Signs the filter is clogged

The usual first sign is slowness across the whole house rather than at one spot. Tubs, sinks and toilets all drain sluggishly because the tank is holding water back instead of passing it along. Gurgling from a fixture when another one is running comes next, and a backup into the lowest drain in the house is the point where most owners finally call.

A clogged filter can look like a stubborn drain line, so we sort out which one we are dealing with. When just one sink or tub is slow while every other fixture drains fine, the blockage sits in that fixture's own line and drain cleaning is the right fix. If everything is slow together, the outlet filter is the first place we look.

It pays to act early. A filter that is working keeps solids in the tank. One that is neglected, bypassed or damaged lets them travel toward the drainfield, and the drainfield is the expensive part of the system to fix.

What cleaning involves

Once the access lid is open, we pull the filter out of the outlet baffle. It is not a clean job, so we wear rubber gloves and work over a bucket. We rinse the buildup off the screen, then set the cleaned filter back into the outlet baffle and secure the access lid so it sits properly.

Before we leave, we clean up any spills around the tank opening so the area is sanitary. We do not leave wastewater on the ground around a tank.

While the lid is off, we also look over the lid and housing. Pueblo has a large swing between daytime and nighttime temperatures, so we check for cracks or warping while everything is open.

Cost and what changes it

A standalone cleaning runs $75 to $150. That covers the visit, pulling the filter, rinsing it, reinstalling it and securing the lid. Call us and we will give you that typical range; the exact figure is set once we have seen the tank.

Two things move it. If the lid is buried under soil or sod, someone has to uncover it before we can reach the filter, and that adds time. And if the filter turns out to be damaged, cleaning may not be the right fix, and the job becomes a different one with a different cost. If what we find at the tank changes the work, you hear it from us before we go ahead, so the price you agreed to stays the price.

How long it takes

The work itself is pulling one filter, rinsing it and putting it back, so it is nothing like a full pumping or an excavation. Most of the variation comes from getting to the tank: an exposed lid that opens easily makes for a quick visit, and one that has to be dug out first takes longer. You do not need to do anything beyond making sure we can reach the tank.

When cleaning is not enough

Cleaning solves a clog. It does not fix a filter that is cracked, worn or otherwise no longer holding together. If the screen is broken or the housing is damaged, reinstalling that same filter would leave a part in the tank that cannot keep solids from passing through. In that case the right answer is a new filter, and our filter replacement page covers that work.

If the drains stay slow after the filter has been cleaned, the cause is somewhere else. It could be a clog in a drain line, which is a drain cleaning job. It could also be something further along in the system, or a plumbing problem inside the house such as a leak or a failing fixture, and leak detection and plumbing repairs are the next step. We would rather tell you the filter was not the problem than leave you thinking it was.

Pieces of the Work

Spelled out, the work usually includes:

  • If the liquid level is above the outlet pipe, stop and arrange professional cleaning rather than removing the filter.
  • Raise the filter partway and let it sit for 15 minutes before removing it fully.
